Welcome to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, a vibrant parish in midtown Raleigh. Though nestled in a quiet residential part of the city, we are easily accessible from downtown, midtown, North Raleigh, and Cary. St. Michael's is a mainstream Episcopal Church - glorifying God in beautiful liturgy and serving Christ and the World for which He gave his life. Our motto is to "Follow Christ in Discipleship and Mission," which we do especially through worship, children's and youth ministries, adult formation, mission and outreach, and the area's finest choral music program involving singers of all ages. If you are new, please find out more.

This Week at St. Michael's
• The St. Michael's family is deeply saddened at the death of our former Rector, The Rev. Lawrence K. Brown, who died on Monday, May 5. Larry served our parish for 23 years, first as Associate Rector, then as Rector until 1995. An Order of Burial, Rite 1 will be held at St. Michael's on Thursday, May 8 at 11 a.m., with a reception following in the Parish Hall. We send our prayers to Larry's wife Julie, his daughters Balynda, Stefani, and Hollis, and his son Benjamin. He will be sorely missed.

New Announcements
• Men's Breakfast - May 13, at 7 a.m. - Adam Shepard is the author of  "Scratch Beginnings - Me, $25 and the Search for the American Dream" - a book about how the 25-year-old author moved to a new city with $25 in his pocket and had the goal of owning a car, living in a furnished apartment, and having $ 2,500 in the bank by the end of year. Adam lived in homeless shelters and learned a lot about people along the way. This is a very positive story about how the American Dream still exists and is attainable.

• Episcopal Farmworker Ministry - Thanks for the wonderful response to the clothing and linen collection during April! 40 large sacks of clothing, linen and cosmetics were contributed. At our welcome back lunch on May18, twenty-two bags will be given to the men of our "adopted" migrant camp.  The remainder will go to Fr. Tony Rojas to be distributed to the numerous needy families he supports from the EFM center in Newton Grove. If at any time in the future you have clothing, linen, blankets, kitchen items, etc.,  please put them in the farmworker bins in the Parish Hall for monthly delivery to Fr. Tony. In addition, this summer we will sponsor Sunday outings for the 22 men in our adopted camp. The outings will be May 18, June 29, July 27, August 24, September 14, and October 12. Coordinators and translators are in place for each outing, but we are in dire need for volunteers (families or individuals) to join in on the fun and serve as ambassadors from St. Michael's. Language is not a barrier. Activities will include an outing to the beach, a visit to the the farmworker camp, worship/lunch at St. Michael's. Contact Jeanne or Paul Nelson for more details at nelsonpaulv@bellsouth.net,
387-3712 (home), or 924-8097 (cell).

• Newcomer Orientation - Are you a visitor to St. Michael's and interested in becoming a member? Please join us in the Parlor (off the reception area), Sunday, May 18, after the 9:30 a.m. worship service for a Newcomer Orientation.  This time together offers the opportunity to learn more about St. Michael's Church, as well as our process for membership.  Contact Lee Hayden at Lhayden2@hotmail.com  or 420-6054 to ask any newcomer-related questions.

• We have a prayer ministry at St. Michael's for families who are anticipating the birth or adoption of a child. If you are expecting a baby or are in the process of adopting a child and would like one of our parishioners to pray for you during this time, please contact Marty Munt at mrmunt@nc.rr.com, or 847-6780. We would love to pray for you!

Coming Up
• Into Great Silence - "This transcendent, closely observed film seeks to embody a monastery, rather than simply depict one.  More meditation than documentary, it has no score, no voiceover and no archival footage. What remains is stunningly elemental: time, space and light. One of the most mesmerizing and poetic chronicles of spirituality ever created, this film dissolves the border between screen and audience with a total immersion into the hush of monastic life."  All are invited to see this film from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Adult Education Room on Thursday, May 8.

• Annual Outreach Yard Sale, May 31 - As you begin your spring cleaning, please set aside your unwanted items for the Outreach Committee's Annual Yard Sale.  Drop-off will begin Thursday, May 29, in the Parish Hall.  Proceeds will benefit the Outreach budget.  NOTE: We still need a Yard Sale Chair/Coordinator this year. This is a short-term commitment with an organizational manual provided for assistance and guidance.  If interested, please contact Scotty Steele at 782-2842.
